Lodge Officers
Freemasonry is a organization that practices the ideals of democracy, principally electing its leadership. Lodge officers are voted upon by the membership, usually yearly, to guide the Lodge in its business and charitable work.
Masonic lodges are led by a Worshipful Master. The Worshipful Master is elected by the Lodge to govern over any business that may come before the Lodge during his year. The term “Worshipful Master” is not a religious term. It in fact, derives from the judicial system in England. The meaning is translated as either “highly respected leader” or “honored leader.”
The Worshipful Master is assisted by two senior elected officers, the Senior and Junior Wardens. These elected officers assist the Worshipful Master in any duties that may arise. The Wardens may be expected to stand in for the Worshipful Master if he can not be present at a Lodge’s stated business meeting. The Deacon positions are sometimes the start of a member’s progression into the elected officer line, though each Lodge has different customs on where the elected line starts. This includes Singleton, where our Deacons are appointed. The Stewards assist the Wardens and typically provide the refreshment for Lodge events and meetings.
The Secretary position is usually reserved for a previous Worshipful Master, a "Past Master", because they are required to know and understand the codes and rules of the Grand Lodge in which the Lodge resides. The Treasurer is the financial keeper of the Lodge and its monetary assets. The Marshal escorts guests while they are within the Lodge and the Chaplain provides encouragement and support to lodge members. The Tiler (or Tyler) is required to be outside the Lodge room for large portions of the meeting, as he is charged with examining the Masonic credentials of anyone wishing to enter the Lodge, and keeping non-Masons from entering Masonic meetings.
